High-Performance Trex Transcend® Benches Built for 70th Anniversary of D-Day

WINCHESTER, Va. – May 2, 2014 – In Bedford, Virginia, the National D-Day Memorial stands as a powerful, permanent tribute to the valour, fidelity and sacrifice of D-Day participants who started the march against Nazi Germany, according to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation. As the nation prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the site is undergoing a restoration to include durable materials that will last for decades and contribute to the importance of this national landmark.

This spring, more than 1,700 feet of Trex Transcend decking was donated and installed as benches surrounding the Memorial’s central plaza. Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products, makes up one small but prominent piece of the Memorial site, and its high-performance, low-maintenance decking materials will offer both extreme durability and long-lasting beauty for the 70,000 tourists and residents who visit the Memorial each year.

“It’s important to both the community of Bedford, and to Americans nationwide, that the National D-Day Memorial be restored to its full glory for this year’s D-Day anniversary,” said            Ronald W. Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. “Trex decking stands up to both the elements and heavy traffic, and our company stands up to support and honour these brave Americans who contributed so much to our country’s freedom.”

This latest donation is just one example of Trex’s commitment to U.S. military personnel. The company works with local and national agencies to help veterans looking for employment. Trex works closely with the Virginia Employment Commission when job openings arise and utilises relationships with military veteran search firms specialising in the placement of military personnel into civilian positions when appropriate opportunities become available.

For the National D-Day Memorial restoration, Trex donated its premiere high-performance decking collection, Trex Transcend, in Tiki Torch, a variegated light brown colour that features rich, reddish-brown hardwood streaking. Trex Transcend will not rot, warp, crack or splinter, and maintenance is hassle-free. And, unlike wood, the product requires no sanding, staining or painting, with a protective shell to defend against severe weather and heavy foot traffic. Free installation of the decking was provided by F & S Building Innovations, Inc., in Roanoke, Virginia.

Bedford was selected as the site for the D-Day memorial because the town suffered the greatest per capita loss of life during the invasion of any town in the country, according to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation. The fully restored memorial will be unveiled in a commemorative service on June 6. More than 8,000 people are expected to attend this year’s events.
