Hosted by contractor Danny Lipford, “Today’s Homeowner” has tackled countless remodelling projects over the years—including this impressive backyard transformation. Jessica and Michael Zoghby, Jr. have always loved to entertain, but a rickety wood deck kept the party inside. If the couple ever wanted to cook out, Danny would first need to serve up his own signature recipe: helping hands combined with tips any DIYer could follow. Learn how to resurface a wood deck to transform your backyard.

Chipping paint atop rotting wood was as unsafe as it was unsightly. “We’ve always been a little embarrassed by the poor condition of the deck and did not allow children to play (there).”

Danny recommended high-performance, wood-composite Trex Enhance® decking in Toasted Sand as the resurfacing material. Not only does the tawny brown match the house’s brick, but it withstands the most unpredictable weather, too. “In south Alabama, it’s humid, cold, hot, sunny and rainy—sometimes all in the same day! All this abuse destroys a wood deck in a matter of a few years. With a little soap and water, we expect a long-lasting outdoor space that looks great.”

Jessica and Michael soon learnt that Trex is as simple to install as it is to maintain. First, Danny and the crew layered the lumber frame with Trex® Protect™ joist and beam tape. Next, they installed Trex® RainEscape® , which gave the family much-needed storage space underneath the deck. The boards, spaced evenly with our hidden fasteners, came quickly after.

“I imagined it would take days to put down a deck,” said Jessica, in regard to the quick build time. So quick, in fact, the Zoghbys rolled up their sleeves to assist with the railing and lighting installation. The final product blew away their expectations.

“With the Trex system, the new deck feels like we added two additional rooms to our home. We will absolutely recommend this product to our family and friends.”
