Trex decking has graced the backyards, rooftops and even front porches of many HGTV® Home Giveaways over the years, but for the first time Trex decking boards find their way onto the side of the home. Trex Transcend® Lineage™ boards make up an exterior wall on the front of this year’s HGTV® Dream Home showcasing an approved application for Trex boards called cladding.

“We are always pleased to have Trex products on this year’s HGTV® Dream Home but are even more pleased this year to highlight the versatility of Trex decking,” said Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex. “By showing how it can be used as exterior cladding, we have created an even more integrated look to the exterior of the home.”

Cladding is defined as an outer layer of material covering another, applied to external surfaces of a structure to protect it and provide an aesthetic alternative to more common siding materials such as vinyl and brick. Trex® Cladding™ is a rainscreen system with components that keep the boards away from the building’s exterior wall with a water-resistant barrier. This creates an air cavity behind the boards to protect the building further.

Trex Cladding uses Trex Transcend smooth-edged decking boards, made from 95% recycled film and reclaimed wood. The boards withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricane-force winds, and hold their colour over the life of the product, unlike wood siding which weathers over time if left untreated. The boards are backed by Trex’s 50 year Limited Residential and Fade and Stain Warranty.

Boards can be applied horizontally or vertically to the exterior of the home. HGTV® Dream Home 2023 uses the light brown Lineage boards in a vertical fashion around a sliding glass door, complementing the horizontal green siding and creating visual interest.

Scott Branscom, build manager for this year’s HGTV® Dream Home, wanted a complementary alternative material for the exterior of the home’s mudroom that had a “natural but contemporary feel.” Trex Cladding was a perfect fit. “Using it allowed us to introduce a different texture and colour. It also allowed us to visually tie in the house façade to the adjacent deck since our designer chose the same colour, Biscayne, for both.”

Lineage Biscayne decking was introduced earlier this year, adding a delicate wood grain and a lighter, on-trend colour to the Trex composite decking collection. In addition to the aesthetic addition, Lineage is engineered to keep cooler than most other composite decking products of a similar colour.*

*Although Trex Transcend Lineage is designed to be cooler than most other composite decking products of a similar colour, on a hot sunny day, it will get hot. On hot days, care should be taken to avoid extended contact between exposed skin and the deck surface, especially with young children and those with special needs.
