Brian Patrick Flynn's Unique Style Infuses HGTV® Dream Home 2021
Designer Brian Patrick Flynn put his own stamp on HGTV® Dream Home 2021 with a fresh take on the Americana design style. Set in the historic coastal town of Newport, RI., Dream Home screamed for the classic touch, but Flynn is never one to play it safe.
For homeowners who want to recreate the look of HGTV® Dream Home 2021 in their own spaces, the former TV producer-turned designer suggests they have fun with the red, white and blue colour scheme.
“Most of the colours used (in the HGTV Dream Home 2021) are a combination of Americana and rich, dramatic preppy tones, but the way they are applied makes them a little more transitional,” he said. “Consider playing with red, white and blue in unusual ways to reinvent the classic combo in a fresh manner.”
The home’s multi-level structure gave Flynn lots of fun spaces to get creative. It’s location on a bluff overlooking the Sakonnet River and its rooftop deck featuring Trex Transcend® decking and Trex Signature® railing, offered unique opportunities for the designer.
“My trick for outdoor spaces is to pair different furniture styles together for a unique look. Instead of just doing matching sets, try pairing unexpected chairs with tables you would not usually mix them with," he said.
The biggest design mistake people make is to commit rooms to just one particular look with one particular arrangement of furniture, Flynn said. To take your space from ordinary to extraordinary, mix it up.
“The way I design houses, I try and choose furnishings both indoors and outdoors that can move around to different spaces and be mixed and matched over the years for fresh looks,” he said. This is even more important in a year when so many people are confined to their homes due to COVID-19. “With so many people home now more than ever, looks can grow tired more quickly. Curating pieces that can work in several different rooms is an amazing way to ensure your design evolves over time with your life.”
